One night at SFJAZZ Joe Henderson Lab, San Francisco
GRAMMY-winning drummer Antonio Sánchez, best known for his drum-based score to the 2015 Best Picture Oscar winner Birdman and work with guitarist Pat Metheny, performs with his explosive Migration quartet in support of their new CAM Jazz release, The Meridian Suite. Sánchez is one of the instrument’s modern masters, a complete musician possessing a rare combination of astonishing technique, soulful groove, and a deeply melodic sensibility – traits that carry over to his skills as a composer and the remarkable new long-form work found on The Meridian Suite. Born in Mexico City, Sánchez began playing drums at age five and pursued a degree in piano from Mexico’s National Conservatory before relocating to the U.S. to study at Boston’s Berklee College and the New England Conservatory. He has since risen through the New York scene to become one of the most accomplished and in-demand drummers in jazz, performing regularly with a jaw-dropping list of greats including Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Danilo Perez, David Sánchez, Miguel Zenón, Donny McCaslin and Michael Brecker. Since 2000, Sánchez has been the drummer of choice for 20-time GRAMMY winning guitar god Pat Metheny, touring the world and appearing on seven acclaimed recordings with the guitarist’s various ensembles. After four increasingly assured releases as a bandleader and the blockbuster success of Birdman, Antonio Sanchez’s time is now.
