Cuban piano legend Chucho Valdés says: “There is a young Cuban pianist named David Virelles, whom I consider a genius.” The Guardian’s John Fordham writes: “David Virelles continues to reveal new facets of the talent and intelligence that have already endeared him to jazz heavy–hitters including Tomasz Stanko, Steve Coleman and Chris Potter.” The number one “Rising Star” pianist in the 2015 DownBeat Critics Poll, Cuban–born pianist and composer David Virelles began his studies at age seven, being exposed to the island’s rich musical traditions as well as the music of Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, and Andrew Hill. Now based in Brooklyn, he’s performed and/or recorded with Ravi Coltrane, Henry Threadgill, Sam Rivers, Wadada Leo Smith, and Jane Bunnett & the Spirits Of Havana, to name but a few. The artist’s 2014 ECM label debut, Mbòkó, placed high on “Best Of The Year” lists in The New York Times, NPR, and DownBeat. His latest album, Gnosis (ECM, 2017) combines thrilling solo piano performances with the title track, an ambitious composition for piano, percussion, woodwinds and strings. “A different side to the great legacy of pianists that have come from Cuba…He is the new school!” (Gilles Peterson)
