At 90 years young, after seven decades of creative music making, alto saxophonist Lee Konitz just keeps on keeping on. Legendary for his work on Miles Davis’ landmark Birth of the Coolsessions and his affiliation with the Lennie Tristano school of improvisational theory, the revered alto saxophonist has recorded more than 50 albums as a leader and continues to gig in diverse settings – including tonight’s spectacular nonet, featuring three string players, the subtle arrangements of Ohad Talmor, and Lee’s very special guest, acclaimed pianist Frank Kimbrough. “While theme and variation remains Konitz’s modus operandi, you will rarely catch him dropping in familiar quotes from show tunes or standards in the middle of his solos. He is truly an improviser who plays ‘in the moment.’” (Bill Milkowski, DownBeat, 10.11.2017)
