The New Yorker may have said it best: “Ravi Coltrane may never fully escape the shadow of his iconic father…but his skill as a canny tenor- and soprano-saxophone stylist has carried him far beyond the glory of his name.” Over the course of a career spanning more than 20 years, the second son of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane has developed into a GRAMMY–nominated instrumentalist, bandleader, and composer. He’s performed brilliantly as a sideman with (among others) Terence Blanchard, Elvin Jones, and McCoy Tyner; recorded a series of acclaimed albums as a leader, and founded the thriving independent label RKM. In March 2015, John Fordham of The Guardian saw the Ravi Coltrane Quartet at Ronnie Scott’s in London and heard the leader play solos that “simmered with quiet conviction. There were glimpses of the pithiness of Wayne Shorter, the freewheeling zest of Ornette Coleman, his father’s beseeching soulfulness, the rhythmic notions of Steve Coleman, and plenty more.” In 2016, Ravi Coltrane performed in a trio with bassist/electronicist Matthew Garrison and veteran drummer Jack DeJohnette on DeJohnette’s acclaimed ECM album In Movement, with its striking new interpretations of John Coltrane’s “Alabama” and Miles Davis’ “Blue In Green.”
