Tickets and information

In a career that spans nearly 30 years, bassist/composer Ben Allison has developed his own instantly identifiable sound and built an international reputation as one of the leading voices of his jazz generation. Known for his inspired arrangements, inventive grooves and hummable melodies, Ben draws from the entire jazz tradition and a range of influences from rock and folk to 20th century classical and world music, seamlessly blending them into a cinematic, cohesive whole. Hailed by the Boston Globe as “one of today’s best young jazz musicians” and by JazzTimes as a “visionary composer, adventurous improviser, and strong organizational force on the New York City jazz scene,” Ben Allison has released eleven albums as a leader, from Seven Arrows (1996) to The Stars Look Very Different Today (2013). This special Jazz Standard engagement will feature his adventuresome quintet Think Free performing compositions from a forthcoming album.

For the final night of his Jazz Standard run, bassist Ben Allison convenes The Easy Way – a group modeled after the drummer–less trios of clarinetist/saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre and guitarist Jim Hall. The group plays tunes by Jim and Jimmy – “All Across The City,” “Pony Express,” “The Train and The River” – as well as originals inspired by their music. Quiet Revolution (Newvelle Records) is the new album by The Easy Way; the music is conversational and intimate, small–group interplay at its best.
