Bill-charlap
Five nights, five musical configurations at the Jazz Standard, NYC

Born in New York City to a professional music family, GRAMMY Award winner Bill Charlap began playing piano at age three. He grew up to perform and record with some of the leading musical artists of our time including Phil Woods, Tony Bennett, Gerry Mulligan, Wynton Marsalis, Freddy Cole, and Houston Person. In 2017, the Bill Charlap Trio (with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington) celebrated its 20th year and is now recognized as one of the leading small groups in jazz. His discography includes the acclaimed Blue Note releases Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein and Live at the Village Vanguard, both of which received GRAMMY Award nominations.

An evening of intimate duets with the golden–toned trumpeter Jon Faddis, of whom none other than Dizzy Gillespie declared: “He’s the best ever – including me!”

Charlap convenes another outstanding trio, one that combines his potent pianistics with the nonpareil rhythm section of bassist Sean Smith and drummer Bill Stewart.

Bill Charlap – piano
Peter Washington – bass
Kenny Washington – drums
Tom Harrell – trumpet

The trio welcomes special guest Tom Harrell, voted “Trumpeter of the Year” in the 22nd annual Jazz Journalists Association Awards. “Parsing the components of the trumpeter Harrell’s stylistic identity is the easy part—bebop, post-bop, Latin, and classical influences clearly run through his playing. But understanding just how this admired veteran absorbed it all and emerged with a thoroughly integrated and distinctive musical approach is more difficult.” (The New Yorker)

Kenny Washington – drums
Houston Person – tenor saxophone

“Ballads, blues, R&B classics – gently but unerringly Houston Person’s soulful tenor saxophone brings out their beauty, enhancing a melody with a few deft strokes.” (Dave Gelly, The Guardian, 11.26.2017)
