In the course of Ethan Iverson’s 17–year tenure with The Bad Plus (which he co–founded in 2000), the trio performed in venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall and Bonnaroo; collaborated with Joshua Redman, Bill Frisell, and the Mark Morris Dance Group; and created a faithful arrangement of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and a radical reinvention of Ornette Coleman’s Science Fiction. Since departing The Bad Plus at the end of 2017, Iverson has been keeping plenty busy: serving on the faculty of the New England Conservatory, writing about jazz for the Culture Desk of The New Yorker, and gigging with his own groups and others such as the Billy Hart Quartet and a drumless trio with saxophonist Houston Person and bassist Chris Smith. This Jazz Standard one–nighter introduces Ethan Iverson with the peerless rhythm section of drummer Billy Hart and bassist Buster Williams, and the fiery veteran saxophonist Billy Harper. In citing him as one of 25 essential New York jazz icons, Time Out New York hailed Ethan Iverson as “perhaps NYC’s most thoughtful and passionate student of jazz tradition—the most admirable sort of artist–scholar.”
