Marcus Gilmore comes from music royalty: his father, a saxophonist; his mother, a gospel singer; his uncle Graham Haynes, a cornetist and composer; and his grandfather Roy Haynes simply one of the greatest drummers in American musical history, having worked with everyone from Charlie Parker to John Coltrane. “I knew I wanted to be a drummer as a profession at seven years old,” Gilmore told NPR. “I knew at that point, but I don’t know if everybody else knew I was as serious as I was.” He attended Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music, then went on to perform and record with leaders like Chick Corea, Chris Potter, Christian Scott, and Dave Douglas; and to forge a decade–long association with the groups of exploratory pianist/composer Vijay Iyer. 2019 is shaping up as Marcus Gilmore’s breakout year: He was featured on the cover of the May issue of Modern Drummer and arrives on our stage tonight at the helm of an all–star band including trumpeter Graham Haynes, pianist David Virelles, and an exciting new discovery, the singer Silka. Don’t miss it!
