One night only at the Jazz Standard, NYC
Wolfgang Muthspiel – whom the New Yorker has called “a shining light” among today’s jazz guitarists – made his ECM leader debut in 2014 with the trio disc Driftwood, featuring him alongside two longtime colleagues, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Brian Blade. For his second ECM album Rising Grace (released October 2016), the guitarist assembled an all–star quintet with Grenadier, Blade, jazz luminary Brad Mehldau on piano, and the remarkable young trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. Muthspiel moves between electric and acoustic guitars on this deeply communicative session, his playing by turns grooving (“Boogaloo”) and enchanting (“Rising Grace”). Akinmusire’s lyrical trumpet flights and Mehldau’s probing keyboard improvisations run like golden threads through the fabric of Muthspiel’s compositions including “Den Wheeler, Den Kenny,” the guitarist’s tribute to the late, great trumpeter and ECM recording artist Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014). Rising Grace recently received the coveted five stars from Downbeat magazine in their review of the recording. Come and join us for the American premiere of Rising Grace.
